What’s one more drop? Essential Oils may seem like they can’t be that powerful and why would one more drop be a problem?
An Essential Oil is a concentrated oil extracted from specialized storage sacs, glands or vesicles located within plants. Andrea Butje explans that
“depending on the plant, the essential oil is found in different parts: the flower of a Rose, the fruit of citrus, the leaves of many herbs, the resin of Frankincense and Myrrh, the roots of Vetiver, the twigs of the Bitter Orange Tree (for Petitgrain), the seeds of Coriander”.Andrea Butje, Aromahead
Essential Oils are extracted by utilizing heat and water to break the plant structures the oils are held in. The two most common types of extraction are Distillation and Pressing.
What do we do with the oils once they are extracted?
Here is where all the benefits of Essential Oils come into play. Now that we have the concentrated oils, we can decide how and where to apply. Just like anything you put on your skin, you need to know how to properly apply Essential Oils. Even though they are a completely natural substance, you do need to proceed with caution!
So, tell me; what is the proper way to apply Essential Oils?
There are safety concerns that we covered in Safety Of Essential Oils. Here we are going to go over how to properly apply Essential Oils. It is recommended to always dilute your Essential Oils with a carrier oil. I love using Jojoba Oil as it is a quick drying oil on the skin. Using a carrier oil dilutes the Essential Oil for safe application as well as allowing the scent of the Essential Oil to linger on your skin much longer than applying it neat (directly on the skin without a carrier oil).
Guidelines for dilution
Our dilution guides are based off of diluting in one (1) ounce of Jojoba Oil.
- 1% Dilution 5-6 drops in 1 oz of carrier oil. Use this dilution for managing emotions, pregnant women and children (some oils are not safe for these two groups), compromised immune system and direct use on face
- 2% Dilution 10-12 drops in 1 oz of carrier oil. Use this dilution for massage oils and daily use
- 3-10% Dilution (If 1% dilution is 5–6 drops, then a 10% dilution is 50–60 drops) Use this dilution for specific injuries to muscle, tendon or bone. You will need to put into consideration the individuals health, age and oils being used to determine if this dilution is appropriate and safe.
- 3-10% Dilution. Use this dilution for localized issues such as chest congestion. You will need to put into consideration the individuals health, age and oils being used to determine if this dilution is appropriate and safe.
When used properly, Essential Oils can be a great addition to your home and daily routine.
Like everything around us, Essential Oils should be used with care and consideration. If used properly, Essential Oils are safe and provide a great natural alternative to provide emotional and physical support as well a providing a safe alternative to artificial fragrances.
